"A Day to Give", at Liberté

In a nutshell

The solidarity event at Liberté, called "Un día para dar," promoted empathy and support for the excluded through activities such as workshops, meals, and visits, highlighting the importance of everyday solidarity and the social transformation driven by the self-management of incarcerated people and their collaborators.

Start of the Solidarity Day

A day filled with emotion, where solidarity was expressed with those most in need within the context of incarceration.
As everywhere in the world on every November 29th, an act of love takes place — to remind us that it is the same act we must practice every day, thinking of others and shedding our garments of selfishness and indifference, whether conscious of what we do or wrapped in an unconsciousness driven by ignorance that prevents us from seeing others' needs and the richness of giving that lives within each of us.

Participation of Betina Ferrara

At our Liberté, a collaborator joined us: the renowned visual arts teacher Betina Ferrara, involved since the earliest days of the space, who arrived with a noble spirit of solidarity.

A preliminary debate opened within our space, and it was agreed to carry the idea into practice in a way adapted to the circumstances of incarceration — keeping in mind the "pariah" figures, a word whose meaning points to those people excluded from the advantages others enjoy, and who are even mistreated when they are ignored through the kind of treatment reserved for those considered inferior.

Activities and Highlights of the Day

Breakfast, where tortas fritas were enjoyed; a tour of the production hub's facilities; an activity in the textile workshop — where fabrics destined to become handcrafted bags with special decorations were worked on under the professional guidance of "profe" Betina; lunch; and a sublimation task in Liberté's original workshop — these were the moments that made up a beautiful solidarity day, full of empathy, because that is what it is all about: putting ourselves in the other person's place, to understand what they are feeling in that moment.

Participants and Organization

During lunch, where delicious tagliatelle were served, with the special presence of those who were the beneficiaries of this special day, the compañeros involved in the organization also participated — among them the event coordinator, compañero Omar R; the cooperative's president and founder of the Taller Solidario Liberté space, "Pampa"; the evangelical Christian spiritual guides Luis Becedillas and Cristian. And though they were not present at lunch, other compañeros also worked to make this special and meaningful day happen: "Carlitos," Secretary of the Board of Directors of Cooperativa Liberté and general coordinator of tasks in the space of the same name; Ariel, responsible for Liberté's historic workshop; and countless collaborators who, day after day and in quiet ways, lend their shoulders to this beautiful mark that self-management — achieved by incarcerated people — continues to leave along the road: a true productive hub where solidarity, work, cultural, and spiritual activities all come together.

May every day be… a day to give. Don't you think?— Author

Closing and Final Reflection

A successful close to "A Day to Give" — the faces said it all, especially those of the guests, who were recognized as the people meant to receive a share of affection through acts of solidarity.
