Buzones is the popular name for the isolation or segregation unit within a penal facility. In this space, incarcerated people remain locked in individual cells for most of the day, with minimal or no contact with others and very restricted access to activities, visits, and services.
Confinement in buzones may be imposed as a disciplinary sanction, as a protective measure, or by administrative decision of the penitentiary service. Human rights organizations warn that prolonged isolation can cause serious harm to mental and physical health, and that its systematic use may constitute cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment under international human rights standards.
